Who would win in a fight? Jesus or Bruce Lee? Hands down, Bruce Lee–physically and philosophically. There is an an interesting comparrison here and why I bring up Bruce Lee. I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, which is the Korean martial art. Jeet Kune Do is the martial art style that Bruce Lee developed. Recently I found an instructor of Jeet Kune Do in my area. This isn’t as easy as you might think. In order to officially teach Jeet Kune Do, you need to have been taught by Bruce Lee or by someone whose teaching linage goes back to Bruce Lee. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia which explains who was authorized to teach JKD.
It should be noted that as far as is known, Bruce Lee himself authorized only one person to teach Jeet Kune Do: Daniel Inosanto, who achieved 3rd rank in JKD. Ted Wong, Bruce’s last student, achieved 2nd rank in Jeet Kune Do while training privately with Bruce. After this, Bruce did away with rankings in his teachings, so Ted was never “ranked” beyond the 2nd. Dan Inosanto, however, fully certified Ted Wong to teach after Bruce’s death.
It should also be noted that two other people were certified to teach by Bruce Lee as well. Taky Kimura and James Yimm Lee were certified to teach Jun Fan Gung Fu (the precursor to JKD), but not Jeet Kune Do itself. Also, since Jerry Poteet’s passing, it has become public knowledge that Bruce had motioned to certify Sifu Poteet. A select few friends and students of Jerry had the honor of being shown hand written notes, from Bruce to Jerry, urging him to pass on the art of Jeet Kune Do. – Wikipedia
So in order for you to be a teacher in JKD, you have to be able to trace your learning back to either, Daniel Inosanto, Ted Wong or Jerry Poteet. Taky Kimura and James Yimm Lee would be the teachers for Jun Fan Gung Fu (Kung Fu). Currently it is accepted that there are two branches of JKD, Original and the Concepts branch. Within these branches there are even more points of view when it comes to training, style, philosophy and systems. However, a person seeking training needs to be aware that they may end up with frauds as teachers. And even if you find a legitimate teacher, who knows how muddy the philosophy and training has become over the years since Bruce Lee died. Of course you can go back to the Tao of Jeet Kune Do and read Bruce Lee’s own words (better than the Bible). You could also go to the Bruce Lee Foundation website to read up on how to find the right instructor for you.
The point is, next year will be the Fortieth Anniversary of Bruce Lee’s death. In those 40 years, his teachings have become reinterpreted, re-imagined and argued over. There have been false teachers and lousy students. Only a thorough study of Bruce Lee, his writings and interviews with his direct students can a person begin to fully grasp his philosophy. And it has only be FORTY YEARS!
Now let’s go back in time, pre-Christianity. Gods were not exclusive. There was not one true way. You could worship Zeus and Apollo and any other gods. It was ok. The religions of the ancient world, with the exception of Judaism were not concerned about the afterlife or salvation or belief. They were all about keeping a person healthy, having good crops and getting some girl in a toga to sleep with you. Along comes this Jesus guy. He’s a selfish and jealous god. He’s a narcissist and an egomaniac. Worship him, only him or burn in hell for eternity. Sounds like a tyrant to me. He gathers a rogue band of lunatics who think this dictator philosophy has merit. They think this because they are all bat-shit crazy. After Jesus dies, the only authorities on his teaches are his loser, illiterate apostles. They didn’t write shit down because they can not write. But because they are the only people able to pass on this knowledge we need to get it from them. So the only accepted writings are from people like Peter, James, John–you know, apostle sounding names.
So in an effort to write down what someone believed to be the one true way, they made forgeries and would sign the work with a recognized apostle’s name. This is the equivalent of going to a martial arts school and the teacher lying about who taught him, giving you some false linage from Bruce Lee to him. It is unethical today and it was unethical in Jesus’ time also. But they had to do it because nobody is going to read the Gospel of Bill. If you wanted your words read and you were not an apostle, you forged it. This was so prevalent during the birth of Christianity and through the middle ages and beyond that we really can not know what Jesus really wants us to do. What would Jesus do? Who the fuck knows?!
If there is debate today on what Bruce Lee taught after only forty years, and he is well documented plus nothing needed to be translated, what are the chances that over the past two-thousand plus years, and so many translations and interpolations, that what we now read is even remotely accurate? How is this the infallible word of god? How can a god allow such terrible documentation to occur when trying to impart the most important message to his creation? If there is a god he is either a complete moron or he believes the only way to salvation is atheism. Because only a god who would fuck shit up so badly must be thinking, “let’s see if these people can use the brain I gave them and realize I don’t exist.” I think I just confused myself there.
I would caution anyone seeking a teacher for Jeet Kune Do to do their research in order to find a qualified instructor. The same should be said for Christianity, in fact more so, but most Christians are lazy. So lazy that they will read The DaVinci Code from cover to cover or 50 Shades of Grey, but will not read the entire Bible–the book they believe was written by GOD! They won’t even do the research. Perhaps if they really knew how fucked up everything really is they would quit being Christians. The problem is, they read deeply flawed books like Lee Strobel’s “The Case for Christ” and never read another book again. They don’t want to hear the arguments against what Strobel says. Most atheists I know began as Christians and wanted to believe. But after really doing the work couldn’t honestly hold on to their beliefs anymore. If they were lazy, they would still believe the lie.
Oh, and by the way, Bruce Lee was an atheist. When asked in 1972 about his religious affiliation, he replied, “none whatsoever”. In 1972, he was asked if he believed in God, and responded, “To be perfectly frank, I really do not”. – How cool is that?!
“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” – Bruce Lee
